He conquered Sweden instead of joining Bayern: Leo Walta, Finland’s new hero

European brand VivatBet recounts the career path of our national team’s midfielder, who became one of the Nations League’s top scorers alongside Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Michael Olise, and Viktor Gyökeres.

Walta, Huuhkajat’s greatest hope in Nations League

It’s largely thanks to Leo that Finland still have a good chance of qualifying for League B – it was he who turned the match against Albania around with his free kicks. In the 26th minute, the midfielder leveled the score with a powerful strike, and midway through the second half, he beautifully chipped the wall, securing a crucial 2-1 victory for our team.

That was the 23-year-old midfielder’s fourth goal in the tournament. Earlier, Walta had scored twice in the game against San Marino, which ended in a crushing 7-0 victory for Finland.

How Leo’s career began

Walta started playing football at Pakkalan Palloseura, and at the age of just 8, he was accepted into HJK’s academy. Leo stood out for his tremendous desire to improve, so in his spare time outside of team training sessions, he would practise on a pitch near his home to refine his ball control and shooting accuracy.

At 13, Walta impressed one of the European giants, Bayern Munich, with his skills. The German club noted the boy’s remarkably mature footballing intelligence, but were unable to finalize the deal as FIFA regulations prohibit international transfers of players under the age of 16.

Leo stayed in his home country, won the award for Helsinki’s best young player, and began playing for HJK Klubi 04 in the third division. When he was 16, Walta joined the Danish club Nordsjælland and made his first-team debut two years later. However, due to a lack of regular playing time, he went out on loan to another Danish team, HB Køge, midway through his second season. This move gave Leo more confidence, and he produced some impressive results, recording 3 goals and 4 assists in 14 matches.

Breakthrough

At the age of 20, Walta moved to Sweden and reached a new level. At Sirius, Leo became a key figure in the team’s play. The midfielder not only skilfully orchestrated attacks but also frequently finished them off. Proof of this came in the form of 24 goals in 63 games and 4th place in the Allsvenskan scoring charts during Walta’s second season in Sweden.

The Finnish player then joined Swansea City, who play in the English Championship, and recently went out on loan to Los Angeles FC, where he has yet to make an appearance. So far, Leo’s career outside Scandinavia hasn’t gone particularly well, but we hope that his impressive performances for the national team will have a positive impact on his club career.

Why Walta is a cool player

Leo’s skills are as diverse as VivatBet sports betting. He demonstrated this perfectly in the clash with San Marino: first, Walta delivered a pinpoint cross that found Adrian Svanbäck’s head; then he scored with a superb strike into the top corner from outside the penalty area; and finally, he dribbled past three opponents before skilfully slotting the ball into the far bottom corner.

The midfielder’s trademark is his free kicks. Before taking a shot, Walta analyzes the distance to the goal, the position of the goalkeeper and the wall, and then decides whether to go for power or finesse. A significant factor in the effectiveness of Leo’s strikes is his small shoe size (40.5) and regular training sessions with his sister, who is also a professional footballer.

Walta is currently a key player for Finland. After four Nations League matches, he leads the team in both chances created and average key passes per game. As for goals scored in the competition, Leo is second only to Harry Kane, which clearly illustrates his talent.
